3) The New England and Southern Colonies

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 9 months ago

The New England and Southern colonies were more different than they were alike. They were mainly similar politically. Socially and economically they had some differences.

One way they were alike is that they both had a royal governors.Their royal governors were chosen by the king, they made all of the decisions. The royal governors tried to make fair laws that the people wanted. Some of the people didn't like the rules, but they had to live by them. Another way the New England and Southern colonies are alike is that the people got to vote for lawmakers. Virginia had the House of Burgesses that was a legislature picked by the people. The Pilgrims had said that they would follow the laws they made in the Mayflower Compact. Both of these are early examples of democracy.

The New England and Southern colonies had some differences. One of the differences is their religion. The Southern colonies were started for money, to make money.  New England chose to be religious. The Pilgrims started the New England colonies to  escape harsh treatment. Their ship, the Mayflower, arrived off the Massachusetts coast in 1620. The colonies there had been started for religious freedom. Roger Williams was a minister in Salem, MA. He opposed forced attendance to church. In 1636 he founded Rhode Island for religous freedom and seperation of church and states. Anne Hutchinson believed that a person could worship god without a church, minister, or bible. She was brought to trial and forced to leave Massachusetts and she fled to Rhode Island.

Another reason why they were different is because of the geography. New England had rocky soil, but  the Southern colonies had good soil. The Southern colonies could grow more than the New England colonies. The New England colonies only had enough food to feed their family. The New England colonies had to trade and ship goods to places so they can have their goods. The Southern colonies grew tobacco and their own indigo and corn. The geography meant that the Southern colonies had slaves and the New England colonies didn't have slaves. Indentured servants were people who worked for someone who would bring them to the colonies. The New Englanders had indentured servants.

Therefore, the New England and the Southern Colonies had many differences and many similarities. They had political similarities. The geography of the colonies made the cultures different therefore socially they had differences too.
